Welcome...
Welcome to the Phoenix! We are a year away from burning our mortgage, and we couldn't be more proud.
In 1995, an 1885 building sat on a parcel of property once owned by Ebenezer Johnson, Buffalo's first mayor, its barred doors cobwebbed, its interior a junked ruin. It had been, in its time, a lecture hall for Buffalo Seminary, a seance house, and soup kitchen; now it sat abandoned. Wouldn't 95 Johnson Park make a lovely theatre?
Now the New Phoenix rises on Buffalo's oldest park and the renovations continue (and, with your help, continue!). We think that the past has led us to the present and, in turn, to you.
Founder and Executive Director Richard Lambert offers another devised work, SWEET STREET, October 29 - November 21. Described by Lambert as an “intersection between the photographs of Milton Rogovin and the music of Leonard Cohen”, SWEET STREET explores the issues of homes and homelessness and asks patrons to donate canned food towards food banks in Buffalo. Kelli Bocock-Natale directs Brian Riggs in MACBETH (March 11 – April 3) in a new interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy of greed and murder inspired by the world of physical theatre. The New Phoenix concludes its season with IN A DARK, DARK HOUSE, by Neil LaBute, on May 6 - May 29.
In short, we look forward to an extraordinary season, and we hope you'll agree. With a full calendar of collaborating and visiting artists, our board, our staff, our actors, and our sponsors are all working to make our humble, historic home into an inclusive enclave for the arts.
BUT WE NEED YOU TOO...
For just $60.00, you can purchase a member's pass which gives you four seats to use any way you wish and us the means to continue our renovations, our artistic goals, and our community work. It's not only the best deal in town, but one that will guarantee every earned dollar is stretched to the maximum as we continue to build Buffalo's home to alternative theatre. Come see for yourself! Please turn to the back panel to join us, or email for us more details about tax-deductible, specific gifts at newphoenixbox@yahoo.com
