Starring: Richard Lambert, Candace Whitefield

THE CORRESPONDENT

The New Phoenix Theatre on the Park is pleased to announce the WNY premiere of THE CORRESPONDENT, by Ken Urban.  The play opened on Friday, March 24th and ran through Saturday, April 15th, 2017.

THE CORRESPONDENT
was directed by Kelli Bocock-Natale, and starred Richard Lambert, Executive Director and Founder of New Phoenix Theatre, Candace Whitefield and James McMaster.  Designers were Chris Cavanagh (lights & sound) and John Kehoe (set design).

About the play:  A grieving husband hires a dying woman to deliver a message to his recently deceased wife in the afterlife.  When he receives letters describing events that only his wife could know, he must determine if the correspondence is from a con artist or if his wife has returned from the grave.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
We are so proud here at the New Phoenix that we are able to bring to WNY a play that has been produced at several regional theatres. When I first read this play, I was drawn into the idea what if someone is reincarnated? And what state of mind must a character be in to actually believe in reincarnation? Do we, the audience, believe it? Or is it a con?

I read plays constantly and am always trying to find something that challenges me as a director. For the role of Philip Graves, I immediately thought of my partner Richard Lambert. He is perfect for it, he has the talent to bring vulnerability, strength and believability to this character. Joining us, are two actors James McMaster and Candace Whitfield, they have brought such depth to each of the characters they portray.

Playwright Ken Urban got the idea for THE CORRESPONDENT when he visited a website hawking an Afterlife Telegram service. This service becomes a pivotal plot device in the play. Does Philip actually believe that he can send his deceased wife a message? How does each character deal with the ethical issue of life after death? Faith?

I leave it to you, the audience, to make your own decision. Thank you for choosing our theatre and for supporting live theatre art in Buffalo, NY.

Kelli Bocock-Natale.
